Since SIP is Session Initiation Protocol, and is a form of VOIP, it is used as a digital voice emulator/PRI replacement. It gives VOIP service more capabilities, such as DID’s (Direct Inward Dial numbers). The benefit of this service on the commercial level is the ability to avoid buying a PRI card to accommodate a PRI. SIP trunks usually require SIP licenses and connect right to the system. SIP trunks are typically more cost effective than copper or t-1 circuits.
